碩士 === 國立臺南大學 === 國語文學系碩士班 === 98 === The main theme of this thesis is a study on the usage of poetry in Legends of Tang Dynasty. The thesis is focused on finding the specificity of using both poetry and prose style in Legends of Tang Dynasty, in order to experience a better poetic beauty in Legends of Tang Dynasty than other Classic Novels. The thesis is divided into six chapters. The first chapter introduces motives, study on related researches, the characteristics and development overview of Legends of Tang Dynasty. As a result of the creation of different literary style, second chapter intends to find out how poetry begins to be used in Legends of Tang through the research of Historic and Biographical literature and Novels before Tang. Followed by observing the dynastic background: open-minded society, contemporary mainstream literature - poetry drive, the identity of the legendary poet and the prevalence of literati beast, we can see how poetry used in Legends of Tang became popular in that time. In Chapter III, the quantity and types of poetry used in Legends would be two main aspects to show the relevance to writers and literary tales themselves. By in-depth analysis of poetry used in various Legends and of some similar articles, the artistic beauty of applying both rhyme and prose is proved clearly in Chapter IV. After that in the fifth chapter, seven functions introduced and the value of poetry’s application in Legends of Tang will state how it influences Legends of Tang and Novels afterwards. Chapter VI of the "Conclusion" discourses on the effect of the interaction between two major literary forms and their academic value.
