Description
Summary:碩士 === 國立臺中教育大學 === 課程與教學研究所 === 98 === The study aims to explore how cooperative learning strategy for teaching senior high students reading English newspapers influences their English reading proficiency and attitude toward learning English. The researcher attempts to assess the effects on students’ English reading proficiency and attitude toward learning English by using cooperative learning strategy. The researcher adopted quasi-experimental approach. The subjects consisted of 87 freshmen at a municipal senior high school in Taichung, including 47 students in the experimental group and 40 ones in the control group. The teaching experiment was from December 21st, 2009 to May 21st, 2010, which took place once a week, spanning 18 teaching hours; namely, 18 weeks in total. This experiment included two phases, the former from December 21st, 2009 to January 31st, 2010 spanning 6 weeks while the latter from February 20 to May 20, 2010 spanning 12 weeks. The results in this study are as follows. 1. The following are the effects on students’ English reading proficiency by receiving this teaching experiment. (1) There were no statistical differences in word recognition between the experimental group and the control group. (2) For the first 27% and the last 27% out of 87 students in both groups, there were no statistical differences in English reading comprehension proficiency. The middle part of the 87 students’ English reading comprehension proficiency in the experimental group is better than that of the control group. (3) The results differ in the tests taken by these subjects. ○1The result in the Achievement Test of Student Post indicated that the experimental subjects’ English reading proficiency was better than that of the control subjects. ○2The results in the General English Proficiency Test-Intermediate Level Reading Comprehension Test indicated that there were no statistical differences in English reading proficiency between the first 27% and the last 27% out of 87 students in both groups. The middle part of the 87 students’ English reading proficiency in the experimental group was better than that of the control group. 2. The following are the effects on students’ attitude toward learning English by receiving the teaching experiment. (1) There were no statistical differences in motive for learning English between the experimental group and the control group. (2) The experimental subjects took more interest in learning English than the control ones did. (3) The experimental subjects had more sense of achievements in learning English than that of the control ones. (4) The experimental subjects’ attitude toward learning English was better than that of the control ones. According to the results in this study, the researcher gave senior high students some advice for reading English newspapers, providing the practical suggestions for teachers’ reference when teaching students reading English newspapers by means of using cooperative learning strategy.
