Summary:碩士 === 國立臺中教育大學 === 語文教育學系碩博士班 === 98 === Abstract This thesis aimed to study the arrangements of plot elements and the connotation of themes of Japanese writer Haruki Murakami’s recent novels – "The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle", " Sputnik Sweetheart ", "Kafka on the Shore" and " After Dark ". These works contain a large introspective connotation, covering aspects from individual, family to social aspect. It showed the attitude of Murakami's writing changes gradually from prior alienation to participative. In addition, the recent works differ from the early ones included characters suffer from psychologically traumas can resolve their inner complex and get redemption. The introspective essence of Murakami’s writings not only expands the pattern of his novels, but also enriches their international literary value. The main research method used is text-analyzing, supplemented by literature review. By studying translated novels of Murakami, this study analyzed and summarized Murakami’s unique writing style, techniques, theme symbolization, and from its evolution concluded writing characteristics of his recent works. The first chapter is introduction. In addition to motivation, scope, constraints, research methods and research structure, this chapter also gave a sketch of Murakami's life and works, and taking literature reviews as the foundations of this study. The second chapter explored the fundamental causes of the inner complex of the mental-stranded characters in the novels, as to show the multi-reflection from individual to social dimension. Chapter III summarized the ways Murakami depicted the mental-stranded characters by analyzing the behavioral characterization of stranded characters, and explored the fable’s nature of the works through surreal descriptions. Chapter IV looked into the use of communication elements in the novels, included sex, psychic, violence, letters and so on. Then analyzed the “image of the salvation” of the novel arranged by Murakami and finally interpreted the positive implications of his works. Chapter V analyzed the "Murakami phenomenon" and explored the changes in Murakami’s writing style. And finally, pointed out the connection between the novels and Murakami’s personal life, and the possibility of Murakami’s writing trends in the future.
