The purposes of the study were as follows: (1) To investigate the contents of the professional knowledge of visual art with which those teachers are supposed to be equipped. (2) To have an insight into the professional knowledge of visual art of the elementary school teachers in Tainan currently. (3) To figure out how different background variables influenced those visual art teachers’ performance of the professional knowledge of the subject. (4) To provide pedagogical implications for the visual art teachers in elementary school, the educational authorities, school administrators, institutions for teacher education, and further researches based on the findings from the study. For the purposes listed above, this study adopted the methods of literature review and induction to scaffold the contents of the professional knowledge of visual art of the elementary school teachers from five aspects, including the knowledge of special subjects, general knowledge of education, knowledge of counseling management, attitude toward education, and professionalism. The design of the questionnaire was completed accordingly. The study methods were conducted by investigating the literature concerned and using the questionnaires. The subjects recruited were 250 visual art teachers in elementary school in Tainan. The data collected were analyzed and discussed by adopting an average value and standard deviation in descriptive statistics as well as using t-test, One-Way ANOVA, and Scheffe' method. The findings were provided in the following perspectives: (1) The professional knowledge of visual art of the elementary school teachers in Tainan currently was above the intermediate level. (2) The relation between different background variables and the professional knowledge of visual art teachers was described below: (i) Knowledge of special subjects: varied from the highest level of education, academic background, and current positions at school. (ii) general knowledge of education: varied from the highest level of education, academic background, and current positions at school. (iii) knowledge of counseling management: varied from the highest level of education, academic background, and current positions at school. (iv) Attitude toward education: varied from the highest level of education, and years of teaching visual art. (v) Professionalism: varied from age, the highest level of education, academic background, and current positions at school. On the basis of the findings from the above mentioned aspects, some pedagogical suggestions were provided for the visual art teachers in elementary school, school administrators, the educational authorities, institutions for teacher education, and further researches.
