A Study of the Effects of Sanfui-Xinyi Essential Oils on Allergic Rhinitis

Its etiology and pathogenesis are complicated and the recurrence rate is high. To investigate effect on allergic rhinitis of applying Chinese herbal essential oil(Sanfui-Xinyi Essential Oil) during dog days (the 3 hottest summer days), the present study used the Rhinoconjunctivitis Quality of Life Questionnaire (RQLQ) and rhinomanometry to measure the functional(physical, emotional and social)disturbance of the patients and nasal airflow resistance. A longitudinal, one-group design was used. The Xinyi Essential Oil was placed on the back during the dog days (14th July, 24th July, and 15th August 2009). The study subjects included 58 patients who completed treatment. Changes of scores in the domains of the RQLQ and computed rhinomanometry , which were assessed by the patients before and after treatments, were recorded to evaluate the efficacy. Four months after treatment, we conducted with the patients to examine the perceived efficacy of this treatment during winter. The RQLQ scores indicated significant beneficial effects of treatment (Repeated ANOVA F = 20.63, p＜.001) ; and Short-term effects on the resistance The results show that Chinese herbal essential oil-Xinyi Essential Oil onto back during dog days is an effective, safe and convenient treatment for allergic rhinitis.
