There is no single nutritional index can predict malnutrition status. Therefore, nothing is more important than to collect various kinds of nutritional index. The aims of this study are to evaluate nutritional status using variable methods and to identify the risk factors associated with poor nutritional status of the elderly people living in a senior apartment in Kaohsiung county. We enrolled 128 elderly (63 males and 65 females, who average age 81.05 ± 6.21 years 65~97years) .We assessed with Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA),Activities of Daily Living (ADL),Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADL),24-hour dietary recall,Mini- Mental State Examination (MMSE).Anthropometric measures and biochemical analysis. Using MNA assessment, well-nourished 63.3% ,At risk of malnutrition 31.3% , elderly showed malnutrition 5.5% . Moreover, significant difference also presented in body weight (BW) 60.63 ± 10.26 vs 56.58 ± 10.89 vs 43.69 ± 4.63kg、body mass index (BMI) 24.83 ± 5.46 vs 23.14 ± 4.76 vs 18.87 ± 2.33、ideal body weight percentage(IBW%) 112.40 ± 24.96 vs 105.21 ± 21.64% vs 85.81.21 ± 10.63%, mid-arm circumference (MAC) 25.85 ± 4.09 vs 23.89 ± 2.92 vs 21.53 ± 2.18cm of anthropometric measures and albumin (Alb) 4.44 ± 1.68 vs 4.97 ± 5.05 vs 3.93 ± 0.43 g/dL,Hemoglobin (Hb) 13.34 ± 1.67 vs 12.92 ± 1.60 vs 11.89 ± 0.89 mg/dL of biochemical analysis. In addition, both gender and age had significant effects on anthropometric measures and biochemical analysis. In addition, both gender and age had significant difference on anthropometric measures and biochemical analysis. In a word, our study demonstrated that MNA shows a significant role on nutritional assessment of elderly living in a senior apartment. Nutrition status measured by MNA and variable nutrition indexes can improve the sensitivity and specificity on the nutritional status evaluation of elderly people, and confirm malnutrition effectively and provide appropriate nutritional intervention to improve the elderly peoples malnutrition in order to promote their health.
