Summary: | 碩士 === 國立屏東教育大學 === 視覺藝術學系 === 98 === This creative discourse, Searching for Freedom beyond Frames: Tsai Pei-Ling’s Creative Study on Urban Imagery, is the result of my creative attempts and consecutive thinking within the period of 2008-2009. Its purpose is to discuss modern city dwellers’ ambivalence towards the concept of “freedom” and “confinement” while I anatomize my own, mystified conception towards city frames and structures, freedom and confinement. I hope that, after introspecting my own feelings and thoughts in the creative process, I may make a breakthrough in my style that fully demonstrates the beauty of alternative artistic languages.
In respect to the theoretical basis of my discourse, I first begin from the sociological perspective, analyzing the subtle connection between the constitution of a city and human behavior. I then further explore the relationship between freedom and frame/grid from philosophical and literary perspectives, centered upon the symbolic images of bird and cage. Some corresponding artworks related to the urban imagery, by artists of home and abroad, are introduced here, so that I may refer to their compositions and expressions of emotions during artists’ creative process, to fully demonstrate the central theme of my works. The final section is where I evaluate my own works and enhance the connection between urban imagery, freedom and confinement, making the discourse a coherent body.
Regarding to medium and techniques, I apply synthetic media as the foundation for the canvas, to enrich the visual effects of the oil paintings. With shape and form, I choose dim, grayish and mystical hues along with the black, deliberately kept outline, which correspond with the spatial color that the theme intends to convey. Linear structure and divisions, grid and rectangular shapes occupying most of the canvases are used to solidify the idea of urban frame and confinement.
I have categorized my works into four collections: “Birdcage”, “City/Frame”, “Sky” and “Exit”. Together they represent a gradual transition from confinement to freedom. I hope that this creative study may reflect my inner thoughts, and build a bridge of care and concern connecting our inner humanity and the outer environment.
