Methods: Twenty-eight ears were investigated. They belonged to 19 female subjects who had moderate to moderately-severe sensorial neural hearing loss. SRT, MCL, and UCL were measured in unaided and aided conditions. PB scores for unaided and aided conditions were administered at the following intensities: MCL, 25 dB SL, 30 dB SL, 35 dB SL, 40 dB SL, 45 dB SL, and UCL-2 dB. To discover the intensity which yielded the PB MAX, PIF was performed at 2 dB per step, from 25 dB SL to UCL-2dB in both unaided and aided conditions. Results: (1) Among the 8 intensities tested, including the one yielding the PB MAX, MCL was the only intensity that yielded significantly different speech recognition score in unaided versus aided conditions (p<.01). The score in aided condition was 2.43 higher than that in unaided. (2) PB scores tested under the intensities of 40 dB SL, 45 dB SL, and UCL-2 dB were similar to PB MAX, in both unaided and aided conditions. (3) UCL-2 dB had the highest percentage both in testability among various intestines in administering speech recognition test, and in the agreement between the PB MAX and PB scores. Conclusions: It is recommended that UCL-2 dB be adopted as the intensity in administering speech recognition test, not only because it is testable at this intensity for all subjects but also because the PB score yielded at this intensity is very close to the PB MAX.
