Paiwan tribes didn’t have written words to make systematic arrangement and record of their history and culture in the past and all of the Knowledge are inherited by dictation through generations. Therefore, the myth, oral history and the ballads of the Paiwan tribes all have the functions as the carriers that preserve all of the tribal knowledge system so far.
All of the myth, oral history and the ballads need to be expressed by narration. On the other hand, narrative contents are more important than narrative styles. Because the contents include the thought and comprehension that Paiwan people use to get along with the world and the contents also represent the unique and elaborate culture.
The researcher devotes herself to educational job and it is fortunate that she can experiences the performances of Paiwan ballads frequently. After painstaking study of the lyrics, researcher finds Paiwan ballads often present the social image and environmental changes at that time. In the view of sociolinguistics, the lyrics are important clues for us to understand the social development. Through the narration of the lyrics, we can understand the development and process of the culture at that time. This viewpoint fits in with the features that researcher mentioned before and the researcher is very interested in studying them. Therefore, the research decides to make this subject as the thesis title and hopes to present the narrative features and changes of the Paiwan tribes by studying the contents of the ballads.
