Although the heroine, Jane Eyre, fights against the uncompromising values in Victorian society with her slight force, she marches fearlessly onward. In Hilary Bailey’s Mrs. Rochester: the Sequel to Jane Eyre, the female protagonist, Miss Jane Eyre, has married her former master Edward Rochester and stepped into a new stages of her life with the title of Mrs. Jane Rochester. By means of scrutinizing the searching of female self and independence, women’s growth through marriage is discussed. Both Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre and Hilary Bailey’s Mrs. Rochester: the Sequel to Jane Eyre are discussed, but Bailey’s novel is the focus of this thesis. Chapter One presents the logical connection between Brontë’s and Bailey’s novels. Also, the introduction of Bildungsroman, the discussion of women’s status in marriage, a brief analysis of Bailey’s Mrs. Rochester: the Sequel to Jane Eyre and the outline of the following four chapters in this thesis are stated. Chapter Two deals with women’s underprivileged situations in patriarchal society and also women’s awakening and reflection in marriage. Chapter Three discusses how different kinds of use of power out of love lead married women to different results of the quest for female self. Chapter Fourexpounds women’s growth in marriage and their pursuit of equality and the opportunities of self actualization in marriage. Chapter Five concludes the analyses in the previous chapters, emphasizing that both married men and women should treat each other equally in order to create a real mutual beneficial relationship and grow to be wiser, better, and more mature together in marriage.
