Due to the limited application to the site investigation of the underground excavation project using traditional rock stability analysis, Dr. Gen-hua Shi newly developed Key Block Theory and its analysis programs in PC for the complete and systematic geological analysis of the underground rocks. The basic concept of Key Block Theory and its analysis programs are initially introduced and a case study of underground excavation in rocks of the Mingtan power plant using the theory for the analysis of removable or key blocks formed by four perpendicular rock walls in the underground chamber is followed. A further research is conducted for the stability analysis of rocks due to the variation of resultant forces with the horizontal seismic forces from a various directions. According to the experience and analytical results obtained from this research, a flowchart for the analysis of underground excavation in rocks using Key Block Theory and its programs at design and excavation stages in the future is proposed for the engineers.
