This research employs Dr. Genhua Shi’s Key Block Theory, which was originally proposed in 1995, and his developed programs to the analysis of underground excavation in rocks. The analysis includes the force calculation and design of rock support using the number, sliding forces and directions and factors of safety of the removable blocks. A case study of underground excavation in rocks of the Mingtan power plant is implemented in this research. The original removable or key blocks formed by four walls of the underground space can be located using the computer programs of Key Block Theory. However, the blocks can be further stabilized by the installation of rock supports to rotate the resultant forces in various directions. Finally, followed this research experience and results, a flowchart for the analysis of underground excavation in rocks using Key Block Theory is proposed for the engineers in the future at design and excavation stages.
