| Summary: | 碩士 === 國立高雄第一科技大學 === 應用日語所 === 98 === In recent years, the population of foreign tourists to Taiwan has increased noticeably. With the operations of the Taipei Metro, also known as Taipei Mass Rapid Transit (MRT), more and more tourists choose to travel by MRT rather than take a bus or a taxi. For this reason, the Taipei Rapid Transit Corporation (TRTC) provides tourists with guidebooks giving sightseeing information. Guidebooks in Japanese are also available for Japanese tourists. Publications by TRTC include Metro Information, Tourist Map, and Taipei City Travel. The aim of this paper is to discuss the translation of Taipei City Travel. The first section is a discussion of proper nouns. Translations of proper nouns found in Taipei City Travel are organized into charts. This section is comprised of three parts, including Chinese characters used in Japanese writing, phonetic borrowing and others. The second section of the paper is focused on translation techniques, omitted texts and coherence with examples and explanations. Finally, suggestions are made for each section and are applied to retranslating the chosen texts with weak translation in Taipei City Travel. It is hoped that this study could be useful for translating other guidebooks in the future.
