The article is divided into five sections. Section I - The Introduction explores the reasons for focusing on shadows as the subject of this portfolio study. The goal of the study is first, to explore the formal and spiritual connotations of shadows when they appear in different times and spaces; second, to express the conversion of positive and negative space in the use of shadows of different shapes and colors. The study’s scope extends to an explanation of the content and method of putting creative ideas into practice. Section II – Creative thread and theoretical foundations: Portfolio studies with shadows as the main theme, as well as extension and change are explored, taking Tolstoy’s particular theory of communication as a foundation; theory relating to the connotations of shadows and exploration of contemporary artists’ work on this theme conclude this section. Section III - Exploration of the author’s creative concept: this involves taking derivatives of “shadow” by simplifying its form and abstractly representing its internal essence, endowing the shadow with color, and then producing a visual image which transforms positive and negative space. Section IV – Creative works and analysis of form: within the “shadow” theme, the works show differing content and shapes, similar to the individual variations in musical compositions. The content of the paintings is divided into seven variations, namely the “chair”, “cpricio”, “lines”, “leaves”, “strings”, “living things”, and “withered” series. Section V – Conclusion: the artist explains her closing reflections for this study along with future directions for her work. To summarize, the conclusions of this study are as follows: First, shadows manifest themselves in different figurative and spiritual layers and have varying appearances due to differences in time and space. Second, the shadows in the paintings are endowed with different colors, and the interchange of positive and negative space in the visual image causes the viewer to strip away innate notions of shadow and view them from an entirely new perspective. 李足新 2009 學位論文 ; thesis 58 zh-TW
