The study used quantitative research methods to analyze science achievement test and questionnaire data of the fourth graders in elementary schools in TIMSS 2007 Taiwan Data. Total of the study samples were 1,158 people, including 1,068 children of Taiwanese people, 90 children of new immigrants. By t test, ANOVA analysis methods, the research explored the differences between Taiwanese children and children of new immigrants on fourth grade in personal background factors, scientific learning attitude, scientific inquiry, scientific achievements and scientific literacy.
Major findings of this research were described as follows,
1.Taiwan's fourth -graders in TIMSS 2007 scientific achievements were at the senior international benchmark. And Taiwanese children were at the senior international benchmark, children of new immigrants were at the intermediate international benchmark. Scientific achievement performances of Taiwanese childrens’ were better than children of new immigrants.
2.The scientific achievements performances of Taiwanese children and children of new immigrants depended on family education resources, and children's scientific learning attitudes. It showed that more family resources, more positive attitude high scientific achievements would be.
3.Taiwanese children and children of new immigrants had significant differences in the cognitive domain of ‘knowledge ‘, ‘apply ‘, ‘reasoning’. In those three domains, Taiwanese children were better than children of new immigrants. Additionally, ‘reasoning’ of Taiwanese children was the most excellent, "apply" second, "knowledge" the lowest.
4.There was no significant difference in the performances of scientific learning attitude between Taiwanese children and children of new immigrants. In three domains of scientific learning attitude, the ‘scientific learning self-confidence’, ‘scientific interest’ were no significant difference. The only significant difference was "science learning behavior" and Taiwanese children had better performances than children of new immigrants.
5.There was no significant difference in the performances of scientific inquiry between Taiwanese children and children of new immigrants.
6.Taiwanese children were ‘good scientific literacy’; children of new immigrants were ‘general scientific literacy’.
7.In the scientific achievements, the scientific learning attitude, scientific inquiry between Taiwanese children and children of new immigrants had a significant positive correlation, in which scientific achievements and scientific inquiry related to moderate.
