Abstract
To enhance the relationship between children and grandparents, this action research studied 29 children enrolled in a kindergarten. Following Noddings’ caring strategy, I conducted grandparent-child relationship enhancement activities for one semester using picture books, multimedia, and experience activities. To further understand the feelings of grandparents and children, 28 informal interviews were conducted with two pairs of grandparents and children, and daily life observations were also recorded.
Results indicate that grandparents became more involved in participating in the children’s caring education. Although the internalization of children in caring education was slow, it should not be overlooked. Promoting caring education in kindergartens was not easy. The teacher’s introspection and sensitivity were very important throughout the process. She had to attentively create time and space for child discussions, offer a platform and chances for caring practices, carefully observe the interaction between grandparents and children, and understand how they thought. When the children demonstrated acts of benevolence, the teacher encouraged them and gave them positive feedback. Informal interviews revealed that the caring forms of the two pairs of grandparents were similar, and that the way children thought of their grandparents reflected the importance of the grandparents in their minds. This action research on caring education shows that the relationship between grandparents, teachers, and children became closer, and each one experienced important change and growth in the process.
