During 50-70’s, these areas were the relay stop for the tourism along the Central Cross Highway and were thriving. However, this prosperous scene has long gone. Using the residents as the study population, this research sought to discover the place meaning of these two areas. As shown in past studies, the concept of place attachment has two dimensions – place identity and place dependence – and focus was given on the bonding between recreation resources and its’ users; and those place meanings were defined by the outsiders. But now, the focus has shifted to the residents to define place meaning of the studied areas. Therefore, this study adopted in-depth interview and APEC (Auto-driven photo elicitation conversation) method and supplemented with observation to construct the place meanings that were based on the life experiences of the local residents in Sibao and Tiansiang. The study discovered that the place meanings of these two areas were found in the favored places of the residents where their life experiences and stories have been embedded. As these areas are fall within the jurisdiction of the Taroko National Park, it is important that in the planning of development project in these areas, the park management should first understand the place meanings of these areas as defined by the residents, and consensus should be reached between the park managers and the residents which is found to be lacking now. Therefore, the place meanings discovered in this study can be used as a reference for the park management to add value to the future development of the studied areas.
