碩士 === 國立東華大學 === 體育學系 === 98 === In a basketball team, everyone bears same pressure of the training, but bench players don’t have space to bring their capability into full play. In such circumstances, how can an athlete keep playing the role of a bench player? This problem gradually aroused researcher’s motive force to do the research. The purpose of this research is to explore a bench player’s process of developing self identity while participating in a team. The Qualitative Research method was adopted in this research. The research subjects are men’s basketball team players of the national university. Data were collected through participant observation and in-depth interviewing. The verbatim text was combined with observation records. After progressively analyzing, researcher established the process of the bench players how they form their self identity. The results of the study found that the development of the bench player’s self identity could be divided into three phases after joining the lightning basketball team that is practice-team training, competition training and competition three periods. The process when bench player internalizing their self-identity would be influence by constantly changing of their self-concept. Through the process of interaction with the team, bench player gradually developed self identity of being a bench player and through this complex psychological path bench player found the sense of belonging to themselves.
