Exercise can improve physical and mental condition of older adults. This study aimed to identify correlates of non-exercisers and their self-reported barriers, thereby drawing up an effective intervention strategy. This study was conducted using secondary data analysis, which was based on the dataset of 2002 National Health Promotion Knowledge, Attitude and Behavior Survey carried out by the Bureau of Health Promotion, Department of Health, Taiwan. Among them, 3939 of aged 65 and older were analyzed. Chi-square test and stepwise logistic regression (forward) models were performed using SPSS version 12.0. The results were as follows: (1) 82.7% of Taiwanese older adults meeting the criteria of non-exercisers.(2)Stepwise logistic regression (forward) model showed that participants classified as non-exercisers were labors in daily life, lower educational levels, having depressive symptoms, perceived health status as bad, with paid occupations, no monthly income, no cardiovascular diseases, females, areca chewing.(3)Self-reported barriers older of health, work, physical, family, time.(4)Significant discrepancy of barrier patterns between different gender and age groups were witnessed. This study suggests that the Government set up the recommended amount of exercise for older adults and promote it to the general population. Professional coaches should provide tailor-made exercise prescriptions for older adults to meet the needs among different groups. Future research is recommended to adopt objective measure of physical activity and to adopt prospective cohort research approach to obtain better understanding on this topic. 古博文 博士 2010 學位論文 ; thesis 91 zh-TW
