At that time, they have also brought in the modernized “International Architecture,” which used concrete as was popular in the international field then. Now concrete has become the major building structural pattern in Taiwan. In recent years, there has been much higher demand for aesthetic elements and construction quality in building design. Using simple materials, the “exposed concrete” has presented a finer sense of quality over coarse concrete without any additional finishing work. Through this, it has eliminated the coarse construction quality and covered it with fancy construction materials; rather, it alleviated the need for workmanship and techniques for the construction. Until now, it has been widely utilized in urban cities and rural countries in public construction projects and complex residential houses. Since the key techniques, construction experience and materials for “exposed concrete” are possessed by only a handful of professional firms in Taiwan, doubts exist in the industry when using “exposed concrete” that has led to the stereotype of demanding higher difficulty and higher personnel quality; further, the increasing cost has also resulted in higher unit prices. Using the Historical Case Study approach, this Research will review the types of defects found during “exposed concrete” construction in local markets on the one hand and analyze the reasons on the other. On this basis, this Research will propose solutions for the material and construction stages in order to improve the construction quality of the “exposed concrete” in a comprehensive manner. The Research shall include the following results:? 1. Establish the information that is lacked in the “exposed concrete” literature and the research: Based on the construction costs of the “exposed concrete,” the unit price will be analyzed for making comparisons with the external wall type frequently seen in the local market. Next, the statistical result of Historical Case Studies will be employed to analyze the construction quality of exposed concrete in local markets and the type of defects that are frequently seen. 2. Analyze the key factors affecting the quality of “exposed concrete”: By arranging and analyzing the result of the Historical Case Study, the defects affecting the construction quality will be learned. Based on the characteristics of material and the construction methods, the reasons for defect will be analyzed to come up with three key factors that affect the quality of “exposed concrete,” namely Formwork Engineering, Concrete Mixing Ratio and Concrete Pouring. 3. Propose solutions for “exposed concrete” quality control: The solutions for avoiding the defects will be established according to the above-said three key factors, i.e. Formwork Engineering, Concrete Mixing Ratio and Concrete Pouring.
