| Summary: | 碩士 === 國立中興大學 === 台灣文學研究所 === 98 === Jimmy Liao（幾米） has been popular since ten years ago. His picture books are always the best-selling and have a great influence on Taiwan’s literature. This study aims to know the topic about the cultural phenomenon on Jimmy’s picture books. I selected 30 picture books to analyze. “Lonely Writing” is used as a method to analyze the texts in these thirty works.
This study tries to present the connection among Jimmy’s picture books, cities, and metropolitan citizens. From the textual analysis, we can find Jimmy’s deep thoughts toward lives in metropolis. Jimmy who massively uses “loneliness” to describe the distance and un-safety arisen by metropolitan cultures graphics the thoughts and care behind the “loneliness.” From the image-based textual analysis, we can find that Jimmy’s unique artistic style extracted from metropolitan cultures as a role of soul salvation.
This thesis is mainly based on two issues: Time and Space. Analyzing Jimmy’s masterpieces from a temporal perspective, three aspects, such as specific time scale, reference coordinate of time, and broken pieces of time pressure, are used to explore Jimmy’s works, which grasp the public’s minds, sketch the contours of lonely lives in big cities and carry an responsibility—an inspiration to live. On the other hand, from a spatial perspective, Jimmy describes loneliness in his works for three elements: paved paths to secret, the forgotten amusement park, a maze with clues to convey the meaning.
The cultural studies on Jimmy Liao’s picture books have been popular for years, which lead a trend of visual interpretation to literature. These works even become reading materials in the classes. This study also wants to know the marketing strategy of Jimmy’s works. The successful promotion of Jimmy Liao’s works can owe much to the general manager, Yu-shan Lee（李雨珊）, in Jimmy S.P.A. Co., Ltd. From the reports broadcast by mass media, Jimmy has become one of the top picture book illustrators in Taiwan.
