They create impressive results. Shanghai has developed from a domestic city to an international economic center and metropolis. Its speed is unparalleled. Known as the leading economic power in China, Shanghai, for its economic development, is regarded as the epitome of whole China''s. 2010 World Expo is the first time held in developing countries. Its influence is far-reaching in the aspects of reforming the city’s function, optimization of the industrial structure, improving of the international image and position. It’s also an excellent opportunity and challenge for Shanghai''s economic development. This study uses the document analysis, official statistics and information in China, journals and professional publications, etc., for the purpose of reaching an in-depth analysis of the establishment, evolution, stages of economic development, changing of industrial structure, and the characteristics of economic development of Shanghai special economic zone. There are some problems that Shanghai is facing as follows: (a) declining economic growth, (b) widening gap between urban and rural areas, (c) serious environmental pollution, (d) developing backward at other international metropolis, (e) an agreement yet not reached among regions. We propose countermeasures which include: (a) promoting industrial upgrade, (b) creating a fairer environment, (c) emphasizing environmental protection, (d) strengthening urban construction, and (e) promoting regional economic integration.
