The present study aimed to investigate what factors English teachers of junior high schools in Taoyuan County, Taiwan would take into consideration when selecting textbooks. A questionnaire was administered to a total of 304 teachers to collect information such as the English teachers’ attitudes toward textbook selection, how the textbook selections proceed in junior high schools in Taoyuan….etc. The participants were basically recruited from twenty-seven junior high schools in Taoyuan County. After the relevant data were gathered, the results of the descriptive statistics via the SPSS program showed:

(1) most students’ English proficiency and learning needs (M = 4.31, SD = 0.78) (2) opinions from teachers having used the textbook (M = 4.27, SD = 0.72), (3) publisher’s reputations (M = 4.24, SD = 0.74), (4) salespersons’ service (M = 4.20, SD = 0.82) and (5) teachers’ pedagogical belief and teaching method (M = 4.05, SD = 0.76) were the top five external factors which most of the English teachers in this study would consider when selecting their own textbooks.
In terms of internal factors that would affect the junior high English teachers’ decision in selecting textbooks, (1) the textbook uses accurate and proper English (M = 4.46, SD = 0.60), (2) the textbook provides an intact package such as workbooks or teacher’s manual (M = 4.44, SD = 0.67), (3) the textbook aims to develop four linguistic skills (M = 4.42, SD = 0.68), (4) reading articles are interesting and informative (M = 4.37, SD = 0.65) and (5) language tasks vary, and increase students’ motivation (M = 4.36, SD = 0.70).
