To know the management conditions and modes of sustainable agriculture as well as their relevance to profits, this research uses purposive sampling and chooses five organic farms and four conventional farms of southern areas that have organic certification for years in Taiwan. In-depth interview and farm observations are used to collect information about production costs, productivity, earnings, net profit, etc. Research results show that the main mode of existing sustainable agriculture is “family management” in Taiwan. If professional capacity and facilities are sufficient, the cost of sustainable agriculture is 1 times greater than that of conventional agriculture, the productivity is approximately equal and the unit price is about 1 times higher; therefore, net profit increases. It appears that a transformation from conventional agriculture into sustainable agriculture means upgraded farming and multiplicative profits for farmers if possessing professional capacity, professional facilities and proper management. Optimal “family management” needs 0.3 hectares of farmland and three plastic net houses (divided into 9 smaller houses) with a height of 5.5 meters. The expense of these facilities is about NT$ 3 million and the most family labors needed are a couple, who can employ some people if cooperate properly. Through this management mode, each person is expected to get a net profit of about NT$ 41,000 per month. Jiing-shan Tzeng 曾景山 2010 學位論文 ; thesis 84 zh-TW
