Currently, a great numbers of digital appliances on the market have network functionality and interactive human machine interface. However, the manufacturers still lacked a set of mature control mechanism for their digital appliances to monitor their operating state and also cannot fast renew the service functionalities of their products. The manufacturers have to dispatch their designated staffs to detect products and update the system functionalities, and thus, the waste of manpower and time might occur. Therefore, we took the digital refrigerator for an example in this study and proposed an error detection mechanism for the operation of digital refrigerators which combined the XMPP with the OSGi technology. In addition, we also provided three kinds of operation models: the refrigerator error detection model, service packs detecting and updating model, and digital refrigerators service model. The refrigerator error detection model was responsible for detecting whether the digital refrigerator normally works or not. The service packs detecting and updating model was responsible for the operation state of detecting service functionality and updating service functionality. The digital refrigerators service model was responsible for providing the management service of the storage foods in the refrigerator. The system can detect and infer the cause itself by the error detection mechanism and immediately inform the error messages, when the digital refrigerator had an malfuaction. The manufactures and clients can obtain the occurrence and causes of an error to rapidly respond. Through this mechanism, the manufactures can remotely renew and update the service functionalities of the digital refrigerator according to the requirements from the clients to provide people with much more convenient, much more complete, and much more protecting digital live quality.
