However, until today rather limited studies in Taiwan reporting whether or not music therapy has effect on alleviating anxiety and pain for post-operation patients during their wound dressing change. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the therapeutic effects of music therapy on anxiety and pain in post-operative patients during wound dressing change Using a purposive sampling method and two group, pre-post quasi-experimental research design, 73 post operative patients who were older than 14 years old were included in this study between January and March 2010. The subjects were randomly assigned to either music (n=37) or control (n=36) group. Music group subjects listend to selected music for 30 minutes for two continues days while underdoing wound dressing change; and control group subjects received routine care. Self-reported anxiety was measured by State Anxiety Inventory (SAI) and Visual Anaglogue scaleof Anxiety (VAS) ; and acute pain was measured by Brief Pain Inventory-Short Form (BPI-SF). Data were analyzed by using SPSS 12.0 for Windows statistical software package. The descriptive and inferential statistics used in this study included percentage, mean, standard deviation, minimum, maximum, chi-square test, pared-t test, independent t test and ANCOVA. This study found that music groups level of state anxiety was significantly lower than control group (p= .000 and .000 for first and second day). Music group’s VAS score was significantly lower than control group (p= .000 and .000 for first and second day). Music group’s level of pain “now” was significantly lower than control group (p= .000 and .000 for first and second day). Music groups level of the pain “worst” was no significantly different than control group (p= .345 and .737 for first and second day). Music groups level of pain “mild” was no significant different lower than control group (p= .126 and .055 for first and second day). Music groups level of pain “average” was no significantly different lower than control group (p= .137 and .923 for first and second day). Music groups level of pain interference “general activity”, “mood”, “walking ability”, “normal work”, “relationship”, “sleep”, “enjoyment was no significantly different lower than control group. The results of the study confirmed that listeing to music can reduce anxiety and pain in post-operation patients during wound dressing change. Nurses who take care of post operative patients are recommended to apply music therapy starting from ten minutes before wound dressing changes and lasting through the whole process on the first day after the operation in order to promote wound healing and then enhance patients’ body, mind, and spirit comfort. However, until today rather limited studies in Taiwan reporting whether or not music therapy has effect on alleviating anxiety and pain for post-operation patients during their wound dressing change. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the therapeutic effects of music therapy on anxiety and pain in post-operative patients during wound dressing change
Using a purposive sampling method and two group, pre-post quasi-experimental research design, 73 post operative patients who were older than 14 years old were included in this study between January and March 2010.
