A study of psychological needs and purpose in life of the elderly receiving home health care in Southern Taiwan

碩士 === 輔英科技大學 === 護理系碩士班 === 98 === To explore the correlation between the basic information, activities of daily living and the psychological needs, or the purpose in life, we survey a cross-sectional data concerning the psychological needs and the purpose in life of the elderly people receiving home health care. Our research object are the elderly people over 60 years old receiving home care nursing and home care services in Kaohsiung, Pingtung counties and cities. A convenience sampling method is adopted. Using the personal basic information sheet, activities of daily living scale, elderly psychological needs scale and the purpose in life scale as a measure tools the desired date is then collected via face to face individual interviews and being analized by software SPSS11.5.The mean age was 78±7.1 among the 137 qualified elderly people. The study shows that the psychological needs as a whole is located at a low level (about 2 scores), while considering the respective aspects, the most urgently want is to meet the demand of physiological and safety needs. The psychological needs is affected by the birthplace, marital status, educational level, living conditions, economic status, and the kind of disease. The activities of daily living is positively related to the psychological needs. The number of children is negatively related to the psychological needs. The economic conditions, living conditions, marital status, religion, birthplace , and the kind of disease are a significant predictors of the psychological needs. Those who are self-perceived economic status of poor, living alone, single, widowed, no religion, from other provinces, and sick with many kinds of diseases show a higher psychological needs. Moreover, The purpose in life as a whole is located at high level and is affected by the economic status and gender. The activities of daily living is negatively related to the purpose in life. The activities of daily living, economic status, and the gender are a significant predictors of the purpose in life. Those who are self-perceived economic status of good, poor at activities of daily living, and men show a higher score in the purpose in life. It is expected to provide the relevant home health care units with a further study reference.
