The Champion Reader Activity (CRA) is one of the events promoted by all of Taipei Elementary Schools in order to cultivate children reading habit. This study is not only based on qualitative research, but also integrated practical CRA cases. We conducted semi-structuralized interviews with selected thirteen CRA winners across medium/high-grade students to understand their reading and library use behavior. The key findings include:
1.The major self-motivation of CRA candidates is knowledge pursuing
given their reading habit; whereas the external encouragement from
parents in terms of gift or recognition also plays an important
role.
2.The reason for CRA candidates enjoying reading books is majorly
due to interesting contents as well as being influenced by his/her
parents so as to improve his/her own writing skills.
3.The common traits of CRA candidates are reading extracurricular
books every day at least; the major sources of reading for CRA
candidates are school and public libraries.
4.The common action of CRA candidates after reading is to discuss
with their parents or classmates regarding the content, and they
are willing to write down the feedback as well.
5.The CRA candidates use both schools’ and public library resources
very often. They generally read inside the library or borrow books
instead.
6.Some of the CRA candidates agree that CRA matches their reading
habit perfectly.
7.Most of the CRA candidates say that their behavior, and objective
of using libraries didn’t change during the CRA competition.
