The study was carried out in Yilan, which is famous for its theatrical performance. Three main methods were utilized to collect materials: reviewing historical literature, conducting fieldwork and interviewing Mr. Li Hanqin, one of members of Fulanshe band, who has been involving in beiguan performance over seventy years. My research is mainly carried out in two settlements: Erjie and Sijie. They were established in Jiaqing reign (1760~1820). Li Hanqin’s apprentices and himself mainly reside in the two settlements. My survey focuses on three bands: the two bands, both named “Fulanshe”, established by a local famous person, Chen Yuanquan during the Japanese colonial period, and Xidichengzai beiguan band, erected by Mr. Lai, one of member of Fulanshe band in Erjie. The thesis demonstrates that immigrants of Zhangzhou, Fujian, China brought their religion and rituals plus the theatrical performance, beiguan. The religion had been significant to the immigrants in both earlier and latter stages of settlement development. In the early stage, the immigrants carried out religious festivals which had been practiced in their homeland. Their religion supported them against unfamiliar environment and aborigines of the Lanyang Plain. In the latter stage, local temples constituted their own territorial cults stabilized local society. Among numerous festivals, beiguan always attracted most audience’s attention. Since Daoguang reign (1782~1850) to the end of the Japanese colonial period (1895~1945), the population of audience and apprentice of beiguan had increased stably in this region. Erjie and Sijie in the south bank of the Lanyang River were not yet cultivated land to Zhangzhou people. Immigrants in the two places contacted frequently and shared the same lifestyle. Both places, locating in the center of the Lanyang Plain and along the river were in a significant trading route. Both Fulanshe bands in Erjie and in Sijie established separately in the middle of the Japanese colonial era. The local residents’ interest and industrial of Japanese investment such as a sugar refinery and a paper mill contributed to the development of beiguan bands. In addition, fans in the Lanyang Plain supported either fulu or xipi systems. Both places support the fulu system because the head of the band, Chen Yuanquan was very fond of it.
