Originally it was only considered as a research field of science; until now, people’s consensus about environment protection has been elevated, the term “global warming” becomes widely known. Contribute to human society’s overdeveloping of the environment, the emission of carbon dioxide has become more severe than ever, worsen the effect of global warming. Through the reports and analysis related to global warming of four major newspapers in Taiwan, the study examines the framework settings and context of global warming issues.
The study is mainly based on content analysis. Keywords including “Global Warming” , “Kyoto Protocol” , “Greenhouse Effect” and “Climate Change” , samples of articles are selected from newspapers ranging from January 1st, 2001 to March 31st, 2010. From the samples, 692 of the articles from United Daily News, Liberty Times, China Post and Apple Daily (Taiwan) are selected to conduct content analysis.
Through cross analysis of the four major newspapers in the designated years, the result of our study shows some difference on life cycle and short-term report issues. There are mainly four phases of global warming issues, latency period, peak period, half-recession period and rising period, showing it is a long-term issue. The majority of the reports on global warming issues are from edited foreign reports, following by straight news. Starting from 2007, the newspapers in Taiwan have drawn their attention from international to domestic event reports.
On the reporting quantity of context, the economic strategy is mainly focus on "lower the emission of carbon dioxide and greenhouse gases"; educational concept is mostly "promotion of economical energy using and cutting down the emission of carbon dioxide". On the part of impact to the environment, the reports focus on "climate in disorder"; "Disasters already occurred" is the main issue of schedule estimation sector; form of declaration is mainly "academic organizations, experts and scholars"; the impact of event is basically focus on "call of environmental protection groups". Reference is mostly from "foreign reports and wired news", following by "experts and scientists". In the end of the study, there's no material difference of Taiwan newspapers reporting on the issue of global warming. From the chronic order of the content, the difference is obvious. Consequently, the content of global warming issue will change chronically.
On the comparison of the four major newspapers in Taiwan, China Post and United Daily news are focusing on the reports of "national policy" and "economic development"; Liberty Times and Apple Daily (Taiwan) are focusing on the reports related to "environment protection". On the attitude toward the issues, most of the reports are supporting environment protection, and most of the reports related to national policy and economic development are suggestive reports.
