Summary: | 碩士 === 逢甲大學 === 國際貿易所 === 98 === In mid 1980s, Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) has achieved great success in Taiwan. The issue about FDI and Patent Rights (PRs) protection has drawn much attention of both academic scholars and policy makers. While existing literature examined the impact of PRs protection on exports, little is known about its effect on the composition of FDI flows. This paper investigates the impact of host countries’ PRs protection, Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) and other macroeconomic factors on Taiwanese FDI outflows. We use panel data from 1997 to 2008 and adopt Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) and System Generalized Method of Moments (System GMM) to analyze. The results indicate that GDP, population of a host country, import and export from Taiwan to the host country have positive effect on Taiwanese FDI outflows. But the distance between Taiwan and a host country have negative effect on Taiwanese outward FDI. Furthermore, when PRs protection is stronger in a host country, it will attract more Taiwanese FDI outflows. Regarding FTAs, when a host country is a member of Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) or Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC), or has signed FTAs with Taiwan, it will have positive impact on Taiwanese outward FDI.
