Summary: | 碩士 === 逢甲大學 === 科技管理研究所 === 98 === In the 2003, The European Commission (EU) enacted a series environmental regulation for global electrical and electronic (E&E) equipment industries. The environmental regulations include: (1). RoHS Directive; (2).WEEE Directive; (3).EuP Directives. The main purpose of implementation of EU environmental directives is to adress the environmental problem from the Human use E&E equipment, such as use of hazardous substances in E&E equipment, waste E&E equipment recycle and treatment, E&E equipment energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. Therefore, the implementation of EU Directives aims to reduce the environmental problem of people use E&E equipment, and improve the environmental performance of products and manufacture process. However, the EU Directive will have its impacts toward the global E&E equipment industries, e.g. Taiwan’s E&E equipment manufactures in particular. This is because the implementation of EU Directives cause has increased production cost, changes in customer demand, and the negative impact of trade barriers. This research has discussed some significant issues as following: How EU Directives do impact the Taiwan’s E&E equipment industry? How Taiwan’s E&E equipment manufacturers do response to the implementation of EU Directives, and cope with the competitive disadvantage.
The finding of this study has surveyed 27 Taiwanese E&E equipment companies. Here are some companies engaged in equipment manufacturing, logistics, and brand marketing. The method of investigation is based on staff interviews, supplemented by case study. The survey found that the Taiwan E&E equipment manufacturers operating under the impact by the implementation of EU Directives, and the manufacturers attempt to implementation the environmental strategies, such as eco-product development, production environmental quality improvement, and building the suppliers-customers green supply chain, etc. This will also reduce the impact of firms operating area, including the increase in production costs, changes in customer needs, etc. The significant implications of this study are that construction of environmental management strategies in response to external environmental regulation has become a norm of manufacturer’s consensus. Manufacturers should have made changes for their core business activities, such as manufacturing, product development, and supply chain management, to adopt the dynamic of the international environmental regulation. Thus, the academic implications of this study are that further to explore the factors behind the firms change their operation model, in addition to the pressure of the external environmental regulation, economic demands is another important factor. Finally, this research suggests that in term of future researches, researchers should continue conducting the qualitative and quantitative research tools, and to fill the knowledge in the research field of international environmental regulation and corporation environmental strategy.
