Most of the literature on the supply chain issues focused on the hierarchical structure. While most attention has been attracted to the direct interaction between different stages in such a hierarchical-structured supply chain, the collaboration among the entities of the same stage may provide interesting insights. This thesis, in particular, focused the issue where the competed retailers or the stores located in the same area may be working in collaboration with each other for mutual benefits. The scenario in this study assumes that each of the retailers may sell some products with lower prices than the others. Every retailer has its best selling products. Emergent transshipment for the best-selling products is allowed for the other retailers. This research investigates how the lateral transshipment between the competing (but collaborating under certain circumstances) retailers in a supply chain influences the inventory level and the service level. The results of the experimental simulation show that lateral transshipment for an individual retailer may slightly lower the inventory level for the best-selling product but dramatically increase the service levels for the other products that are exactly the best selling ones of the other retailers.
