On the current environmental situations along Pingshi Railway line, we propose recommendations for improvement. On its future destination, we present our ideas to reclaim its past glory and ride into new generations. Like many other railway lines that have gone through boom and bust, Pingshi Railway Branch is no exception. It has lost its importance in coal transportations due to the coal mining policy change. Coal-mining used to be a mainstay of the economy for Pingshi villagers. Fading in coal mining activities has caused population emigration and reduced railway operational revenues. For now, the railway branch is lying idle and growing desolate. This may be time to transform it and re-identify its role as having great potentials waiting to be unleashed in developing industrial culture and landscape. This may be time to bring Pingshi Railway Branch back to life. Key purposes of the Study are: 1. To revitalize and transform local industries into cultural assets for preservation and re-utilization by adopting the concept of genius loci or spirit of place. 2. To facilitate and promote opportunities and strategies for the preservation and re-utilization of cultural assets transformed from local industries by embracing the belief in environmental sustainable development. 3. To stress on the importance of Pingshi Railway Branch being a cultural asset and to sustain its operation through preservation and re-utilization. In the study, we looked into records and documents related to environmental protection issues and green products, cultural assets, space memory, space identity, railway branch cultural preservation and tourism development. Through literature reviews, strategic analyses on theories related and the current status and the survey on Pingshi Railway Branch’s railroad culture and landscape, we come up with the purpose of sustained environmental development along Pingshi Railway Branch. Pingshi Railway Branch is facing a pivotal moment within the last century. Perhaps we can look at it in a different light and re-position it as a railway culture in the 21st century before it disappears into history. The resurrection of railway culture may well be one of the important indicators of Taiwan’s advancement when the public and private sectors are putting forth efforts towards building Taiwan into a green silicon island for tourism in the new century. Transforming cultural assets into tourism assets through building and investing in the cultural and creative industry, we will be able to bring one of the most important memories in Taiwan’s history to life. Combined with packaged tour designs and the development of new tourist attractions, an integral mechanism that provides around-the-island-railway-tour service may come into being.
