The control of nonspecific biomolecular adsorption on the material surface is an important stage to develop the human tissue contacting biomaterials. In this work, we designed a thermoresponsive materials with low bioadhesive control in the applications of drug delivery, biosensing, and anti-bioadhesive membranes. In the consideration of molecular structure design, the study described a novel pseudozwitterionic hydrogel containing thermoresponsive N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAAm) and investigated its biocompatibility.
In this work, thermoresponsive polyNIPAAm gels containing 1:1 molar ratio of positively charged TMA and negatively charged SA were prepared using free radical polymerization. The copolymeric hydrogels exhibited controllable temperature-dependent swelling behaviors and showed stimuli-responsive phase characteristics in the presence of salts. The interactions of these hydrogels with biomolecules and microorganisms were demonstrated by protein adsorption, and bacterial attachment, which allowed us to evaluate their bioadhesive properties.
