It is an indispensable part of a computer. In recent years, the prevalence of computers in our daily lives has led to a steady increase of the demand for memory modules. The recent economic tsunami and the pursuing European credit crisis has caused a rapid decline in the demand for memory modules, consequently the imbalance between supply and demand resulted in a drop in module prices, casting immense pressure on module manufacturers. Only those who are able to acquire key operation prowess may remain sustainable in this competitive environment. This study is focused on the memory module industry. The research seeks to explore the keys to success of memory module manufacturers, whom is susceptible to the overall economic environment, and to analysis the perception of those in the industry towards the aforesaid criteria for success. The methodology of this research include analysis of past literature, expert interviews, and surveys. By employing literature review and expert interview, we have identified several keys for successfully operating a module manufacturing business, and have incorporated these findings as survey questions. The survey subjects include module manufacturers, suppliers, distributors and research institutions. 130 copies of the survey questionnaire were sent out, 72.3% of the questionnaires were successfully retrieved. The research concludes 5 primary keys to success, which includes “product environment and developmental trends”, “management philosophy and company culture”, “RD, innovation, and production control”, “distribution channels and brand valuation”, “suppliers’ relations and inventory capabilities” etc…. Moreover, manufacturers with different backgrounds have different understandings of “superior inventory capabilities”. The research had also demonstrated that subjects with different experiences have shown significant discrepancies in their take on the importance of “the ability to grasp latest trends”, “financial structure”, “delivery time”, “distribution channels”.
