First, a power distrubtion model incorporating a power balance equation describing ac and dc-side circuits of the STATCOM in d-q synchronous reference frame is examined. Then, a cascade control structure with outer voltage control loops and inner current control loops is pre-specified for the STATCOM. Due to multiple proportion-integral (PI) control gains are needed for the pre-specified controller, a problem arises while finding appropriate PI parameters to achieve satisfactory responses. A systematic approach that uses eigenstructure assignment to design a mode-decoupling current controller for a STATCOM may provide valuable contribution to synthesize a set of control gain for the pre-specified feedback framework, so that the resulting control law maintains the physical current feedback loops and also determines the shape of the closed-loop response. The validity of the proposed control algorithm has been verified by laboratory experiments on a 2.5KVA PC-based controlled prototype. Both simulation and experimental results are in agreement with the proposed controller which leads to the conclusion that the mode decoupling control of STATCOM active and reactive power is achievable.
