Summary: | 碩士 === 國立中正大學 === 台灣文學所 === 98 === TV as a mass medium combines images, sound and written words. Colloquial spreading and script dissemination are characteristic of it. The truth that TV is a very popular household gadget and it is easy to use makes it a powerfully influential medium. However, the cultural researchers, when facing the TV pop culture, often judge it with perspectives of business, consumption and entertainment. These researchers think that the TV programs and their creations lack power of uniqueness, positive influences and thinking capability. They are convinced that this medium is far more negative in many ways than the society should expect. The media and drama experts point out that the TV play represents the public subconscious. It should assume the responsibility of carrying the right social culture. Director Wang Hsiao-di, in 2008, used stories surrounding the police and produced the TV drama “Police et vous” or “Mr. Bo-li-shi”. After the series showed on TV, the public were aroused and therefore a lot of discussions took place. It is such an influential phenomenon that now much of the media coverage uses “Mr. Bo-li-shi” to mean the police. The producer, by showing the series, intended to lead the viewers to seriously look at the things, minor or major, happening in the society. The strong belief of the producer urged me to decide on it as my researching goal.
My research is divided into two parts. One aims at the drama content, which I analyze and then I look at the functionality of the characters, the scenarios and the themes. I find out how the narrator presents what she thinks about the public subconscious and tries to inspire viewers’ imagination toward the future possibility. The other part aims at how it affects our society after the main producer, through drama, elaborates on changing the traditional phenomenon. The second chapter of my thesis has a summary introduction of the director Wang Hsiao-di and the review of her important works. Through the understanding of her former works, I come to know the reason of her ideas leading to the creation of this drama, and I further analyze her enthusiastic ideals of making the program. I also part the Taiwanese society background into three periods: the Japanese occupation period, post-second world war period and post-lifting martial law period. I sort out the reference materials collected regarding the change, over time, of the Taiwanese police missions and images. In the third chapter, I focus on the structure of the narration. I look at the arrangement of the plots and the molding of the characters. I also see how the drama winds through by means of two main drive shafts, which are feathered bountifully with beautiful stories, reflecting how the Taiwanese society status quo. In the fourth chapter, I observe the tactics of the play. The play originates from being a melodrama, but I found interestingly it develops out of its type and into some possible genres. Furthermore, by exploring the original themes, this play combines the real events with fictional narration. The fifth chapter deals with the printing media coverage regarding “Police et vous” as a keyword on the Internet, especially coverage after the show is played on TV. The coverage is from Liberty Times, Apple Daily and United Daily, three of Taiwan’s most popular printing daily newspapers. This chapter regards to the analysis of the three newspapers’ standpoints about the police and the police images. Digging it leads to the understanding of how this drama affects other mass media. Chapter Six coordinates the outcome of the research, and analyzes the limitation of the search and the possible directions for possible future investigation.
