Static bandwidth estimation supplies the bandwidth for the sender at the beginning. It improves the accuracy in packet loss condition by the technique of PTR. Dynamic bandwidth estimation which is used during the transmission of multimedia data can estimate the available bandwidth. Furthermore, dynamic bandwidth estimation need not to send the probing packets additionally, that can avoid the transmission data broken down. Due to the size of multimedia data packets are not all the same, the receiver can not get the size of lost packets, which will lead to the difficulty of bandwidth calculation. The paper proposes a method of prediction and modified the bandwidth estimation in packet loss condition. The manner predicts the possible size of lost packets and possible receive gaps, then use the real receive gaps to modify the size of packets in order to estimate the bandwidth of variable packet size. This paper shows that the average error rate of static bandwidth estimation is 8.23% and the average error rate of dynamic bandwidth estimation is 9.51%. The bandwidth estimation mechanism not only has fast estimation and high accuracy at the static estimation but also has accurate estimate bandwidth under the environment of unknown lost packets at the dynamic estimation. So, it is suitable for multimedia network applications. The bandwidth estimation technique by software will cause inaccuracy because of interrupts and memory access time.
