In this thesis, [Zn(HPb)3](ClO4)2 (1), [Cd(HPb)3](ClO4)2 (2), and {[Hg(HPb)2(ClO4)](ClO4)}n (3) have been isolated and structurally characterized by the X-ray diffraction study by the reacting HPb with the respective cations. The X-ray data show that each metal ion coordinates to three chelating bidentate ligands (HPb) and adopts a slightly distorted octahedral geometry in complexes (1) and (2); however, a 1-D coordination polymer of (3) has been observed with the Hg(II) ion coordinating to two chelating bidentate ligands (HPb) and a bridging ClO4- anion in a penta-coordination geometry. In addition, the reaction of complex 1 with Zn(NO3)2 led to the formation of [Zn(HPb)2(NO3)](ClO4) (4) due to the replacement of one HPb ligand by a NO3- anion, suggesting that complex 1 is labile in solution. In transmetallation experiments, the X-ray diffraction study show that a dinuclear complex [Cd2(HPb)3(NO3)4] (5) and a 1-D coordination polymer {[Hg(HPb)2(ClO4)](ClO4)}n (3) can be formed upon the reaction of complex 1 with Cd(NO3)2 and Hg(ClO4)2, respectively. Finally, the transformation from complex 1 to complexes 2 and 3 by reacting Cd(ClO4)2 and Hg(ClO4)2 respectively can be demonstrated, which is monitored by the UV-Vis absorption, fluorescence, ESI-mass and NMR data.
