To select an appropriate supplier, it is necessary to gather suggestions from relevant departments, and evaluate their inputs via pertinent methods. We can then build a model to assess various suppliers based on the evaluations.
For a manufacturer, Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) is more competent and reliable than personal experience in selecting a supplier. First, all relevant attributes are screened by experts'' opinion. Then a questionnaire is designed according to the improved hierarchical structure of the attributes, and distributed to appropriate respondents. Such ensures that the outliers will not skew the result for decision making.
This study presents a real world application of AHP where a PCB manufacturer selects its solution suppliers. All attributes concerning the selection of suppliers are weighted and ranked based on the questionnaire results. The accuracy of the resulting weights derived from AHP has been confirmed by a series of engineering experiments.
