Control-display device used in daily life should not be limited to one or a few specific groups of users no matter what system the control-display device is for. As a result it may be necessary to adopt a control-display device with inclusive design. It is evident that analytic information-processing strategy users respond efficiently and correctly to a control unit and its associated display/stimulus, while holistic information-processing strategy users are often confused under the same circumstances. This implies that the current control-display devices do not meet the needs of users with different information-processing strategies, such as people using a holistic information-processing strategy. Therefore, it is important to design a control-display device that can enhance the performances of holistic information- processing strategy users, so that more users can maintain a safe and efficient operation of a control-display device regardless of their information-processing strategies. We therefore proposed the indexical cue approach as a solution. We verify our approach by means of a hypothesis test (chapter 2), a case-based verification (chapter 3) and a case demonstration (chapter 4). In the hypothesis test, an information-processing strategies effect experiment examines the effect of the information-processing strategies, and an indexical cue effect experiment examines the effect of the indexical cue. In the information-processing strategies effect experiment, an event-related potential measurement of P300 is used to test the information-processing strategies effect while a participant operates a correspondent and a non-correspondent stimulus-response pairing task. In the indexical cue effect experiment, a correspondent and a non-correspondent stimulus-response pairing task, both equipped with stimulus-directed cue and response-directed cue, are used to test the effect of the indexical cue. In the case-based verification study, we verify the experimental results from the hypothesis using a control-display device equipped with control unit-directed cue (response-directed cue), a control-display device equipped with display unit-directed cue (stimulus-directed cue) and a control-display device equipped without an indexical cue. In the case demonstration study, we adopt a control unit-directed cue and a display unit-directed cue to design a control panel on a bus to demonstrate how the indexical cue approach can be applied in practice. The experimental results in this study provide user interface designer a solution for designing a control-display device suitable for more users with holistic information -processing strategies.
