The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between acculturation and health-promoting lifestyle (HPL) among Vietnamese new-immigrant women. This study applied the cross-sectional study design. The data was obtained by convenient sample. The subjects were 102 Vietnamese new-immigrant women from Tamsui.
The results of this study were as follows: (1) Average age of the subjects was 28.8 years old. Most subjects were in the age group of 21~30 (66.7%). The average residence time in Taiwan was 6.15 years. Most subjects indicated that their educational background was junior high school graduated (50.0%). (2) The mean score of health-promoting lifestyle (HPL) was 112.28 showing a medium level. Among six dimensions of HPL, “ Self-actualization ” was the best one, whereas “ Health responsibility ” and “ Exercise ” were the worst ones. (3) The mean score of Acculturation was 2.99 showing a medium level. Among five dimensions of Acculturation, “ Daily activity ” was the best one, whereas “ Language usage “ and “ Ethnic identity ” were the worse ones. (4) The significant predictor of the health-promoting lifestyle of subjects was “ Language usage ”; the better language usage of subjects, the better health-promoting behavior have. Stepwise regression analysis revealed that the ability to read and write Chinese could explain 10.6% of the total variance of HPL among Vietnamese new-immigrant women in Tamsui.
According to results of this study, Government should help those Vietnamese new-immigrant women in thier language adaptation by initiating health projects or mobilize community resourses and organizations to work on it in order to improve their health promoting lifestyles.
