Hyaluronic acid was extracted from the comb of roosters. The goal is to enhance production rate as well as the purity of hyaluronic acid. The production rate of hyaluronic acid was 0.50% for the first extraction, 0.63% for the second extraction, and 0.13% for the third extraction. HPLC was used to determine the purity of the hyaluronic acid. Chitin and chitosan from shrimp shell was another source of glucosamine. The production yield was 6.91% when extracted with alkaline solution. Chondroitin from pig ears and pig trachea was obtained with acetic acid extraction process. The production yield from pig ears is 7.15% while the production yield from pig trachea is .07%. The glucosamines obtained from animal were used in modification experiments. We used the Plasma treatment method to graft glucosamine onto different materials, including pHBV membrane and sutures. The cell proliferation and adherence of pHBV (poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate))membrane also can be further improved by plasma treatment. Biodegradable sutures, Polyglactin, grafted with chitosan were tested to determine it’s properties. The results indicate that modified sutures has better antiseptic property than unmodified sutures.
