Description
Summary:碩士 === 臺北市立教育大學 === 兒童發展碩士學位學程 === 97 === The topic of this research study focuses on the parenting style of a mother who is a new immigrant from Cambodia. The results of this study are based primarily on “Qualitative Research”. The study examined a mother who had recently immigrated from Cambodia. Xiaowen, a mother of three, has two boys and one girl. The researcher visited Xiaowen and her family around 38 times in one year to closely document how Xiaowen interacted with her children. After the visits, the researcher also conducted seven “Semi Structured Interviews” with the family to ask follow-up questions regarding what was observed and to gain a deeper understanding of the mother’s parenting style. The research was based on an analysis of Xiaowen’s daily routine, and the researcher found that the most important objectives of Xiaowen’s parenting style was to ensure that her children were well protected and taken care of, possessed good life habits, and performed well in school. The ways in which Xiaowen teaches her children vary depending on the child, situation, and time. Her parenting style is adaptable and flexible. It is not just one way that never changes. In terms of the child, Xiaowen will educate her children differently based on proclivity, age, and gender. In terms of the situation, Xiaowen will guide her children by involving them in positive activities and giving them more encouragement in their daily routine, but when they are quarrelling (between brothers and sisters), she may use punishment to restrain the children. In terms of the time, Xiaowen is most likely to use positive methods of discipline in the morning. However, when Xiaowen is under the pressure of time (i.e. when she is late for work or she is preparing dinner...), she might resort to negative ways to discipline her children. Even though the Taiwanese society generally has a negative view on the parenting style of newly immigrated female parents, our research has found that the disciplinary methods that Xiaowen uses is influenced by her Cambodian culture. She should also have the ability to learn, to change, and to self-reflect and adjust in providing her children with better educational environment.
