The purposes of this study included understanding the research design of music therapy-related theses research in Taiwan, 1987-2007, and probing the music therapy practice of music therapy-related theses research in Taiwan, 1987-2007. Content analysis was utilized as the method. The research instruments were “Research Design-Oriented Table” and “Music Therapy Practices-Oriented Table,” both developed by the writer on the basis of literature review. The items in the above first table include department of publisher, mode of inquiry and method of sampling; The items in the second table include areas of practice, levels of practice, collection data of pre-activity, client, application of music, method of practice, model of practice, collection data of activity, assessment of client and long-objectives. Data resulting from this study indicated that the number of papers has been increasing in 1999. However, the number of papers with music therapy-related terms in their titiles has been decreasing year by year. The following themes or emphases were noted: 1.“Research Design-Oriented Table”: an increase in the proportion of departments focusing on medical science, an increase in the proportion of experimental research and an increase in the proportion of non-random sampling. 2.“Music Therapy Practice-Oriented Table”: the pedagogy as the most popular field, an increase in the proportion of studies focusing on the collection of musical data and non-musical data in pre-activities, a focus on adult clients, an increase in the proportion of passive listening music, an active focus on group activities, an increase in the proportion of studies focusing on medical models; collecting documents for examination in activities as the main data collection method; an increasing tendency toward pretest-posttest on assessment part and an increasing in the proportion of studies focusing on develop grow up. Four points of conclusions can be drawn from integrating research findings: (1) The inclination of research over therapy; (2) The adoption of other therapic strategies together with music therapy; (3) The need for the elevation of professional training in music therapy; (4) The repetition of research findings. In addition, the categories of research design and music therapy practices could be used as a reference for future research in the collection of data or the establishment of a database.
