The subjects were main characters in mandarin textbooks published in 2007, including those from Han-Lin, Nan -Yi, and Kang-Hsuan publisher. The research tool was based on the theory from the psychologists, inclusive of King, Csikszentmihalyi and Seligman, and then extended to categories of the good life which consists of folk concept of the good life, flow concept of the good life, and the signature strengths and virtues of the good life. In addition, the signature strengths of main characters from different occupations were also analyzed. The main results were as follows: 1. The folk concept of the good life: (1) Among all the folk concept of the good life, results revealed that meaning and happiness occur most frequently, followed by effort, work fulfillment and relationship fulfillment, and then money. (2) There are several sub-categories in the result of folk concept: gratification, realization of the goal, paying less attention to money, hard work, having work fulfillment, thinking highly of relationship fulfillment. (3) The appearance of folk concept of the good life is one-way and positive 2. The flow concept of the good life: (1) Among all the characteristics of the flow concept, results revealed that challenge-skills balance and autotelic occur most frequency, followed by clear goals. (2) Main character often achieves the flow concept of the good life, this proves that the good life and the flow experience are highly correlated. (3) Among all the characteristics of the flow concept, goal is highly emphasized. 3. The signature strengths and virtues of the good life: (1)Results in the virtues category: Courage and wisdom occur most frequently, followed by transcendence and humanity, and then justice and temperance. (2) Results in the signature strengths sub-category: In aspect of wisdom, love of learning, curiosity and open-mindedness occur most frequently. In aspect of courage, vitality and persistence occur most frequently. In aspect of humanity, love and kindness occur most frequently, however social intelligence never appear. In aspect of justice, there is only citizenship and leadership, but no fairness. In aspect of temperance, there is only forgiveness and mercy and self-regulation, but no prudence. In aspect of transcendence, appreciation of beauty and excellence and self-regulation occur most frequently. 4. The signature strengths of main characters from different occupations: (1) Describe the signature strengths of scientist through curiosity and open-mindedness. (2) Describe the signature strengths of artist through creativity and appreciation of beauty and excellence. (3) Describe the signature strengths of explorer through curiosity.
