Miss Huang, the researcher of the study, teaches, as a tutor, in a private after-school caring center for more than ten years. She takes care of many after-school students, and often has to offer counseling service for the children who have difficulties of learning. Many of them are from single-parent family or from other disadvantaged families. Some of the students tend to become "misbehaved" or scholastic deficiency students because they are lack of family resources, including the supports of learning and other social and cultural capitals.
In this study, the researcher studied the case student of "Little Rain". The researcher tried to find to what extent a single-parent family child can be changed mainly in terms of her learning behavior by a private after-school tutor.
The tutor taught Little Rain for six years in an after-school caring center, and tried to provide Little Rain more learning resources, to complement the lack of social and cultural capitals for Little Rain. And the tutor tried hard to keep Little Rain in a stable or even better quality in her study, and even tried to keep a positive development for her self-identity.
The study used qualitative case study method. Multi-method including in-depth interview, participation observation, and evaluation questionnaire was undertaken. Little Rain, a single-parent family child and an elementary school student, was the subject of the study. The factors which may have modified Little Rain’s learning behavior and have influenced her self-identity were to be looked for in the study.
As the result, the findings showed that the tutor of the private after-school caring center did have helped to provide social and cultural capitals to the single-parent family child, Little Rain. She has got better credits and behaved better with the tutor’s help.
