Summary: | 碩士 === 臺北市立教育大學 === 幼兒教育學系碩士班 === 97 === In this study, the researcher entered into an immigrant family and observed the mother’s parenting behavior in her intervention of her children’s sibling conflicts for over two years. The research objects include a Cambodian immigrant mother and her 3 preschool-aged children (two boys and one girl), with the following research questions:
1.What are the mother’s parenting strategies in her intervention of the children’s sibling conflicts?
2.What are factors that might affect the mother’s intervention behaviors?
The findings are:
1. The mother’s intervention strategies differed according to different events and activities. Before dinner when children free played, the mother applied mostly oral strategies in her interventions during sibling conflicts. In dinner time, she would talk the children into behaving before resorting to physical means, such as shouting, scolding, and corporal punishment. After dinner, the mother seemed more relaxed and was more likely to orally intervene and communicate with her children in their conflicts. This study discovered that the mother utilized various strategies to intervene in her children’s sibling conflicts in accordance with the nature of activities, the progression of conflicts, and the intensity of conflicts.
2. The mother preferred to apply negative means in her intervention of sibling conflicts in order to stop conflicts quickly and efficiently. However, oral and physical punishment was unable to prevent more conflicts from occurring because more conflicts would soon emerge. The mother applied an authoritative parenting style to restrain children from displaying unwelcome behaviors. As a result, the mother’s parenting had positive impact on her children’s daily routine training, but yielded negative impact on their personality and emotional development.
3. There were two aspects of factors which affect the mothers’ parenting behaviors. From the children’s aspect, factors such as individual personality, birth order, gender, and age were strongly related to the mother’s parenting behaviors. From the mother’s aspect, factors such as language backgrounds, personality, emotional control, and cultural influences of Taiwan and Cambodia seemed to affect her parenting behaviors.
The immigrant mother often faced predicaments in parenting, for example, feeling linguistically incapable of providing guidance on school work, receiving insufficient support from social networks, and having frequent spousal disputes in parenting decisions due to cultural gaps. In response to the problems above, this research suggests that our government should make the best use of school resources in counseling immigrant families, and provide attentive care for families that might pose potential risks. At the end, multicultural education is not reserved for minority students and their families. In fact, it is necessary for every family, every parent , and every child to receive multicultural education in order to allow parents from all sorts of cultural backgrounds understand and respect each other’s parenting style.
