Summary: | 碩士 === 淡江大學 === 漢語文化暨文獻資源研究所碩士班 === 97 === This research primarily discusses general changes in Chinese, reflected in the “New Youth” magazine during the May Fourth period. The interaction of Western and Eastern civilizations during the May Forth period was a kind of crucial point and made a tremendous influence on the Chinese society. In the process of imitating and learning West, the “New Youth” magazine introduced foreign literary works, and as a result, it not only made the understanding of western world more profound, but also brought some changes into Chinese and Chinese literature. The “New Youth” magazine was in a very close interaction with foreign culture, thus it became the door, through which foreign lexis appeared in China. The borrowed words of that period were not only abundantly absorbed by Chinese lexis, but also made huge impact on the future development of Chinese. The main paper reviewed all general works, related to researching borrowed words in Chinese. Based on the historical approach, we generalized the main features of the borrowed words of every period. We analyzed the characteristics of the borrowed words during the May Forth period, based on the three components in the process of absorbing foreign lexis: the method of absorbing, the range of use and the resource. Besides, the vernacular movement also made huge difference in Chinese. The main paper observed and investigated some specific trends in the process of establishing vernacular Chinese, based on the particular grammatical and lexical changes in the “New Youth” magazine.
